Becoming a Druid – Druid Camp 2025

It’s been a long time since I first found myself at Druid Camp, while I haven’t made it to every camp since then it has become an important part of my calendar. This year it felt like more than a fun event, it felt like a homecoming, like finding paganism and witchcraft did all those years ago.

Which is ironic since we were on new land and the theme was “Re-birth”!

A campfire at night

Since the very wet Pembrokeshire-based camp in 2023 where we connected with Ceridwen and Taliesin (yay!) and I taught a pair of workshops working with them, the voice, inspiration, Awen… the old team led by powerhouse Mark Graham passed the baton to the wonderfully tenacious Esther (“Esther from Leicester” as she introduces herself) and a crew of talented, dedicated people. But Druid Camp had also moved away from the old Rainbow Spirit site in Gloucester and the Pembrokeshire site didn’t quite fit, so we needed a new home.

And Bear and Minx opened the doors of Dragonwood.

Over the past 18 months members of the camp community rallied and worked with the land, and this August Druid Camp settled into land that welcomed us like old friends.

Glorious sunshine, curious spirits, and whispering willows embraced us as Druid Camp was reborn.

I’m still integrating the gentle but powerful shifts I felt while there, and perhaps there won’t ever be words to tell you of the gifts I have received, and saw others touched by too, but I can tell you some things:

The team did an amazing job.

The land is used to magical folk and wants to speak with us.

And for the first time in 10 years I really felt like a part of this community, not hanging out on the edge but right in the heart of it.

A circular doorway of willow between two hawthorn trees, framing a stone altar.

This is not a criticism of previous camps, but a reflection of my journey!

I wrote about my second year here – “A Faery at Druid Camp” – and my wariness of “druids” in general in “The Trouble with Druids“. 2023 marked a definite shift for me and I shared my experience of “Being Bardic at Druid Camp” where I was feeling more at home, more recognised, and more like I belonged, but this year I was no longer asking the question “does this make me a druid?” but stating something that has become true:

“I am a druid.”

Now, I joined OBOD a few years ago and have worked my way through the grades of Bard and Ovate. As of writing this I’m halfway through the Druid Grade material, so I can claim the title on that technicality, but now, after the “Initiation into the Spirit of Camp” ritual held by the new lead ritualist of camp Jay “Beekeeper” Anderson, now I feel it. And yes…

I had studied storytelling and performance as enchantment as a Bard – and still do.

I had practiced the magic of the deep green land as an Ovate – and still do!

And I regularly lead rituals and teach (and spent 20+ years studying philosophy academically, a traditional druid past-time!)

But becoming a Druid, for me, isn’t just about knowing stuff. It’s about finding a home in a community where you can share those skills and where the land recognises you as well as the people.

Halo smiling at the camera with three golden dots of clay on their forehead and tents in the background.

I’ll always be a witch,

and I’m certainly a magician,

but now I know –

I’m a druid too.

I’m always fascinated by what people mean when they say that they’re a druid, a witch, a magician, a pagan, and so on. Sometimes the journey is quick – you find a term and it just fits. And sometimes the journey is long, and starts with a bad impression but you find yourself returning again and again.

I’d love to hear from you, please do comment below – what is your favourite word to describe yourself and the path you’re on, and how did you come to it?

I’m thrilled to share with you that I’ve just signed a new book contract… an introduction to the Goddess Babalon!

And yes, this is the Babalon my first two singles – “Red Goddess, Come“, and “Her Body, The Temple“ were written in honour and praise of!

Pagan Portals: Babalon

Goddess of life, love, lust, liberty, & death

Due out 2026 with Moon Books publishing.

If you haven’t heard of Babalon (the Goddess, not the city “Babylon”) then here’s the short version: Babalon is a modern goddess with ancient roots, and could be best summarised as an earthy goddess of life, death, love, lust, and everything in between.

She embodies total, unconditional, self-acceptance, and is a powerful ally in reclaiming your personal power, pleasure, and freedom. For many she is a symbol of feminine empowerment and liberation, but she goes beyond that, encompassing all genders as she encompasses all of life, and even being the moment of dissolution-creation that is the gateway between potential and manifestation.

Creatrix, seductrix, initiatrix.

Babalon found her birth (or rebirth) as we know her today within the occult religion/philosophy of Thelema, founded by Aleister Crowley in 1904 – in which learning your True (Divine) Will and striving to live it is key – and through ritualists and devotees inspired by her vibrant, challenging appearance within, but, as you can see, she has much to offer people outside of Thelema as well. (To my Thelemite friends, please excuse the simplification!)

Perhaps you’ve met her in her role as goddess of pleasure through my book, Crimson Craft, (or in my magical poetry in Twisted) perhaps you’ve caught glimpses of her in occult spaces as a femme fatale figure, or as a goddess that holds space for feminine rage in modern writings about her.

Perhaps you’ve been put off by the hypersexualised imagery that so often gets associated with her – she was, after all, presented as a stereotypical model of women’s sexual liberation, with titles such as Holy Harlot. Or perhaps you’ve heard her whispers of queer understanding and felt that there is something behind the sensationalism in the “Woman Girt with a Sword”.

Babalon is all of these things, and more.

The hypersexualised, free-loving, femme fatale, and the unconditional love. The Earth of the womb and the tomb. The queer space of the othered, the reclaimed rage, the sweet touch under the tough personae.

And this is why I’m writing about Babalon as a pagan and an occultist, as a queer woman and a sensual witch. I first met her over 15 years ago and about 10 years ago began to work with her in earnest. Most people I meet seem to feel like you must be promiscuous, masochistic, or hedonistic to connect with her, but that isn’t true.

You can be, of course.

Babalon calls you to be those things if they are true to you. And she calls you to not be if they are not.

Babalon asks one thing: that you live your life as your full self.

And I can’t wait to introduce you!

Meet Babalon

In celebration of the new book contract I’m offering a live class, free and online, on 16th June. “Introduction to Babalon” – will be a talk on the basics of Babalon as I understand her, with a magical mini-ritual to connect with her magic, plus a special offer on an upcoming adventure with Babalon…

As always, there will be a replay, but I always make time after the recording for those who do come live to ask questions and share… so pop it in your calendar now and make sure you’re signed up to get the Zoom and replay link here.

Do you know Babalon? Share in the comments what she means to you, I’d love to hear.

Join the Coven Button - embodied magic, divine love, and sacred sexuality. Live classes for red witches and open hearts.

Growing up I always loved the idea of a coven, a space to learn and weave magic, to celebrate and heal, a space of community and immersion in enchantment.

I think the biggest thing that called me about it though was a desire for belonging.

A circle in which I could both explore magic with others, and be accepted, to come home to the sacred nature of life together.

Over time I realised I needed to feel at home in my body first, to find a sense of safety that would let me relax into the divine and tap into the witch-power within, and this fed into my crimson craft work.

But more, this is my dream for the Crimson Coven.

Offered as a training space, but, more that that, a magical circle in which you can experience the divine, your power, a space to belong in all of your parts.

(This is why I’m offering a free talk on kink and magic on 9th September in TEA – one part of ourselves that is often excluded is our desire and it’s role in any spiritual path, RSVP for Kinky Magic here.)

This is a big part of why I want to invite you into the Crimson Coven as a member, rather than focussing on stand-alone courses.

Can you imagine the deep healing and magic possible when you find a sense of belonging?

Can you dream of what it would be like to gently uncover your heart’s desire, to find safety in your body, to feel loved by the gods?

Will you gather your courage to step into a Crimson Coven and be all that you are?

Come Home to the Crimson Coven.

Doors Open for The Crimson Coven

The Crimson Coven Membership is now open! Within the academy schools of magic are slowly blossoming, and the first is the Crimson Coven (not to be confused with the Collective, which has now merged with the main space and remains free). You can sign up to the courses as stand-alone offerings, but I love making space for people to really explore the topics at hand.

In the Crimson Coven you’ll learn tools and concepts for your own embodied magic, and experience the energy of divine eros to help you tap into your power. You’ll work on creating deeper relationships with the deities of love and passion, and discover their support.

Included in your Crimson Coven Membership is:

  • a live, experiential, class every month (starting with the elements of eros series),
  • access to the pre-recorded course Deities of Love,
  • heart-centred meditations,
  • a growing library of pre-recorded crimson classes…

This is also where I’ll be sharing previews of my work-in-progress show Blood & Roses, and offering the Rope for Ritual and Magic classes in the New Year.

You can sign up for just £49 a month, or get discounts for a quarterly or annual membership.

Elements of Eros is a 5 month immersion in the magic of pleasure and embodied power in the Crimson Coven, through the magical powers of the elements – earth, air, fire, water, and spirit.

Our first class will be on Tuesday 17th September, and there will be a replay.

Red icon with text "Elements of Eros - a crimson craft course with witch & author Halo Quin" and a rose border

In this course you will…

  • Tune into your sensual nature, rediscover your sacred body, and unlock your magic.
  • Reconnect with your body to reclaim your true power and come home to yourself.
  • Open to Divine Love to experience total support.
  • And make space for your self as a whole human being to reignite your magic and creativity.

I discovered paganism about the time that puberty discovered me. At the same time that I was learning about the sacredness of nature, I was also learning that other people thought they had a say in how I lived in my body – rather than embodiment feeling divine it began to feel dangerous, the expectations of others restricting how I was allowed to be physically, the disapproval and unwanted attention both serving as reminders that my body was not my own.

I disappeared into my mind, into fiction and fantasy, and pushed down the connection to the divine that I saw in the natural world, but struggled to trust in my own body.

But it niggled me. My traditions are ones of immanence, of wholeness, of embodiment. My gods call me to ecstasy.

I knew I was missing something and I wanted it back.

So many of the places I looked for it were wrong for me though, it wasn’t about sex with others, but my connection to myself, to the divine within. Not finding the erotic with other people, (which is wonderful and brilliant but not what I was seeking), but the divine eros that is mine.

I’m a pagan, a witch, a ritualist… so I began working with the magic of the elements in the body specifically to heal this part of myself. I pulled out tools I’d learned, crafted ritual workings, and reached out to the deities of love and passion for help.

And I set about contacting that power of eros in myself, to reclaiming my sense of being safe in my own body, to connecting with divine embodiment, to unlocking that place of power that the world told me I wasn’t allowed to express.

And this is what Elements of Eros is all about. Giving you elemental tools to connect more deeply with the life and love that flows through you, to rediscover your sexual power in a safe container, to come home to your body, and to release fears that keep you from being whole.

Working with the earth of the body, the air of the breath, the water of your emotions, the fire of your desire, and the divine spirit of mystery and ritual that weaves through it all, you will connect with the magic of Eros, your divine nature, power, and pleasure.

This is for you if…

  • … you want to really Know that the divine is immanent in the world, rather than just believing it to develop a deep trust which results in the total support of the gods.
  • … you would love to feel safer in your body, to bring ease to your life and space to heal.
  • … you want more pleasure in your day to make every day more fun.
  • … you are curious about sacred sexuality but don’t fancy getting naked in a room with strangers.
  • … you are ready to unlock your own power as a whole, embodied, magical being to manifest your dream life.

This is not for you if…

  • … you are dealing with fresh or acute trauma.
  • … you object to mentions of sex in a sacred context.
  • … or you are just looking for an orgy.
  • … you are uncomfortable with paganism, queer inclusivity, or magic.

The course includes:

  • 5 live, interactive classes on Zoom, with replays
  • 5 Workbooks to help you deepen your work
  • Bonus access to my course “Foundations of Witchcraft” and my “Grounding” bundle
  • The opportunity to shape the supporting materials through Q&As
  • And support in the Crimson Coven forum!

Say yes to more magic, more pleasure, and more eros here!

Got questions? Here’s a taste of the magic possible:

In July I offered a ritual experience of the elements of eros in TEA, and you can dive into the replay here!

Tune into your sensual nature, rediscover your sacred body, and unlock your magic in this immersive, enchanted, deep dive!

A Witches Skill: Shapeshifting

I’m settling back into life after an adventure weaving lunar magic in Italy and reflecting back on some of the powerful experiences and beautiful magic that was shared. One piece was on shapeshifting, a skill that has fascinated me since I first discovered, aged 11, that there were adults who also believed in magic and I wondered;

“If witches are real, are shapeshifters real too?”

I soon discovered that shapeshifting is one of the skills of the witch.

(Curious? Join The Enchanted Academy here for a free Masterclass on shapeshifting!)

Shapeshifting shows up throughout history, myth, legend, and even into modern practices today. The skill to shift ones shape, to take on a new perspective, new abilities, new understanding.

Today we think of it as an imaginative or energetic practice, and it is. But it is worth remembering that the world is more nuanced than we think, and the physical is not so far away from the spirit.

Historically shapeshifting was often described as being literal, and there are accounts of people flying to safety (1), or becoming bears, wolves, and hares.

Terry Pratchett (2) illustrates the traditional witchcraft practice of faring forth in animal form well, when Granny Weatherwax hangs a sign up saying “I ate’nt dead” and sends her spirit out to “borrow” an animal’s senses, but it was common in this practice that the spirit was sent out in animal form, as a physical presence itself . The witch-spirit-as-animal, running as a hare, could even be injured and that injury would appear on their body the next day. Scottish witch Isobel Gowdie describes a famous example of this. (3)

The line between physical and spiritual is more porous than we might believe.

I first experienced this practice in a group with the story of Ceridwen and Taliesin (4), where they shapeshift during a chase, travelling through the realms, but I’d spent years exploring it beforehand – in dreams, in meditations and journey, out walking, and even playing hide and seek!

Some of the ways you can work with shapeshifting include:

  • Shifting your energy body to be more inviting or to discourage advances
  • Changing colours to project different impressions or hide!
  • Borrowing the heightened sight of the red kite, or hearing of the hare
  • Exploring different perspectives and landscapes through journeys to learn, and to gain insight
  • Remembering your relationship to the other beings in the web of life
  • To be inspired
  • For fun!

So much in life shifts and changes that exploring deliberate shapeshifting is also a wonderful magical tool for reflecting on what stays the same. What is consistent in you when you become a hare? A cat? A bird? What is, deep down, the core of you?

And what is eternal when everything else changes too? If you feel unsettled and overwhelmed by the fast paced chaos of modern life, finding that thread can be a powerful way of anchoring yourself.

Shapeshifting is, then, perfect for exploring different perspectives and finding the deep truths, for knowing yourself as well as the other.

So I’m really excited to share that I’m offering a FREE “masterclass” on shapeshifting as a witches skill, on Monday 22nd July! You can come and find out more about Shapeshifting, and experience it for yourself, in The Enchanted Academy, which has itself shifted shape and has a new home!

Come deepen your magic and explore the witches skill of shapeshifting in The Enchanted Academy, and gain access to our free community of gorgeous magical folks.

Masterclass FAQ

  • Will there be a replay?
    • Yes!
  • Does it cost anything?
    • The community is totally free, with monthly events including masterclasses, prompts, healing and oracle swaps. There are courses and such that you can choose to sign up to when you’re ready to dive in deeper!
  • Why should I listen to you?
    • I have almost three decades of experience in magic, and many years teaching. Magic is my life (I also have a PhD in philosophy so I have thought about this stuff thoroughly too). My goal is to give you the skills to enchant your life and the world, and I work hard at it. But you can come and see for yourself by joining The Enchanted Academy for free.
  • How do I access the class?
    • Sign up to TEA here and turn on your notifications, the details will be posted in the Common Room!

Notes for the curious:

  1. I heard a tale from Peter Stevenson about enslaved people in the Americas growing wings and flying across the sea to home, which he learned from their descendants. There are other examples of this but this was in the last 200 years, so really recent.
  2. This is in “Lords and Ladies” but the whole “Wyrd Sisters” arc in Terry Pratchett’s work has brilliant illustrations of witchcraft.
  3. Isobel Gowdie was a witch executed in Scotland in the 1600s who gave a huge amount of information in her testimony including a famous charm for becoming a hare. Emma Wilby has written extensively on this in her book “Visions of Isobel Gowdie”.
  4. You can read a version of this story in my book, “Gods and Goddesses of Wales”

If you’re here, you want to live a magical life.

You know that there is magic in the world, wonder and beauty and possibility. There is something beyond the obvious, and you’ve felt that deep sense that you can connect with it, that it can support you… if you just knew how.

You might even have started down a magical path, but the world (particularly the internet!) is so full of conflicting information and “you must this” or “you should that” which just doesn’t work for you and you’re ready for something different.

You’re ready to bring your magic into your everyday life, to root it in embodiment, and turn it into a practice that works for you, regardless of what anyone else says it should look like.

So that’s what I’m here to support you in doing. I learned how to weave my own path and to make magic a natural, easy part of my life, with ease and delight, and you can too.

This is your invitation to bring enchantment deeper into your world, and to live your magical life, where the mysterious and wondrous are everyday and you have the tools to create the life you dream of.

Just like magic.

This is what The Enchanted Academy is all about… what the Crimson Coven Collective opens the door for.

So tell me, do you want more?

Study with Me

While you can book workshops individually, the best way to dive deep is by joining my Patreon. You can choose your tier based on how deep you’re ready to dive… Head over and discover your options here. Or read on…

If you’d like to just dip your toe in, at the £5 tier you’ll be able to explore the library of musings and meditations, and stories, that I’ve shared with my Patreons. Each month I’ll be adding replays of the Crimson Coven Collective livestreams with musings, meditations and practices, along with monthly Patreon-exclusive meditations.

Stepping a little deeper, for £10 a month join me for live Enchanted Circles on magical topics, which will include an oracle reading for the community, a mini-talk on a magical topic, a meditation or practice, and a Q&A. The replays will be available, and there will be options for submitting questions to be asked anonymously (or if you can’t attend live.) This tier also includes the meditations and musings!

The library is ever growing, where you can watch replays of previous classes, and each month I’ll be sharing a self-study class from one of my courses, for you to explore at your own pace. As the months go by the library will continue to expand, and you’ll get the chance to have input on future courses too! At £15 a month, along with the self study options, this tier also includes the live Enchanted Circles, plus meditations and musings.

Being Bardic at Druid Camp 2023

(Before I tell you where I’ve been let me just bounce excitedly about my debut single, Red Goddess, Come – out this week. Listen here! )

A green lady made of branches, cloaked in red, in a red and yellow big top with the sun shining in through the open doorway behind her.

It’s been a few years, as one would expect, since we’ve gathered at Druid Camp, and this year it returned to the world in a Welsh venue not too far from me. Pembrokeshire was very wet, but that’s rather the price we pay for such a gorgeous green land.

Hazel Bird - storyteller with a big beard - stood and lit by firelight.

Druid Camp has become a place where I find myself at home. Despite the rain, or maybe because of the utterly un-ignorable nature of nature, including the rain, it is a space set aside from the world where community happens. There is often storytelling and music around the fire, and this year local storyteller Hazel Bird shared epic tales including Gawain and the Green Knight, and how Albion got its name.

Oh, and the Epic of Gilgamesh.

Which Jos and I cheekily did a version of in 5 minutes for the Eisteddfod. And yes, there is a video… link coming soon! I also got to see Milly Jackdaw‘s show, Mochyn Merddyn, and bands including Mad Magdelen and Seize the Day!

I offered two workshops, rooted in the story of Ceridwen and Taliesin, journeying into connection with our own Awen, and then skills for trusting our own storytelling and ritual ability. As humans we are storytelling beings, and we are spirit manifest. When you anchor the story in your body, trust yourself, and breathe in deep… the magic flows.

It was a delight to come back to this space and remember what it’s like to be in community with other like-minded folk, to learn and the share with each other. Between the Seed SistaAs herbal preparations and “Poison prescriptions” classes I found myself feeling empowered to really engage with the plant spirits of this land, not just sharing space but actively working with them. I’ve dabbled before, but their witchy reminders that we are not dependent on anyone else to be our own herbal healers (with caveats that we need to be sure on our identification skills!) reminded me that this is one of the areas I still give my power away out of uncertainty. Well, no more of that.

A heart shaped window framing sunny blue sky and the tops of trees

In the Ritual Crafting workshop with Penny and Jos we explored memories of ritual and shared inspirations for deepening our seasonal celebrations and magic. There was tarot in the café, and music every night, and the big ritual ended up being that initiatory journey through the Welsh realms into Awen – the birth of Taliesin, the emergence of the Bard who serves and is seen in return.

In community we offer our gifts, receive and give and support and guide in return. You might not always know how you’ve helped, but that’s part of the brew. Pour it in and share it out and let the love flow.

I feel deeply nourished, and not just by the amazing work of the café and site crew looking after the practicalities, cleaning the loos, and making food I could eat with ease and delight. So much gratitude.

I’ve been to several Druid Camps before, but this time around I’m in a much better place in myself, and it showed in people’s responses to my presence and offerings. Over the past few years I’ve found a sense of trust in myself that I didn’t have before, and a chance conversation right at the start of Camp solidified this into a shining light in my heart. Suddenly I felt seen.

And here’s the thing about trusting yourself… about finding that sense of presence and rooting into your personal power… like Taliesin who shone so brightly he was named “shining brow”, your light shines out into the world and people feel it.

Part of this comes from a feeling of being at home in your body, as a child of the earth.

Part of this comes from feeling deep into your core and the fire of love and desire that guides you.

And part of this comes from finding your voice, speaking your truth.

Coming home, rooting deep, and letting the Awen flow.

Given that I used to freeze with stage fright when speaking to just two people at once, and now I’m making a crowd of druids laugh with a story learned that afternoon, I’d say I’ve learned to stand in my presence, step into my power, and shine with my own radiant light, wouldn’t you?

I’m not just a witch, rooted in my own power, I’m a bard, a storyteller, and a Priestess, sharing that light with others to re-enchant the world, and holding space to empower people to step into their own light too. And that, that right there, delights my heart. Does that make me a Druid, too?

Does this magic call to you too? Join me for the Lammas retreat this Sunday:

It is often said that paganism is the religion with homework, and occultists (like reconstructionists) take this to the next level. We are the people of the library!

I love a good conference, and the Welsh occult conference is excellent. Organised and hosted by Sian Sibley and the DragonOak coven, there are always a wide range of speakers and topics, so there’s something for everyone. This May we gathered in Welshpool and topics ranged from Welsh folk magic to the issues of studying non-materialist societies in anthropology to how pagans can walk our talk better.

I loved all of it and took copious notes, but highlights for me have got to be the marvellous Mhara Starling outlining Welsh influences on modern pagan witchcraft – a topic dear to my heart! It was lovely to hear Gwyn Ap Nudd, Ceridwen, Arhianrhod and Rhiannon spoken about alongside the Egyptian, Greek, and Italian threads at the conference… and how present they’ve been (in name at least) in the history of Wicca, neo-paganism, and traditional witchcraft. The gods find a way.

Sara Mastros was inspirational, which is a good sign when someone is discussing the Orphic mysteries.

And special mention to Jack Hunter for bringing in phenomenology – which was the underlying approach in my PhD.

I have an entire notebook full of notes, as usual, because it all feeds into magical practice, even when something seems unrelated at first glance. Like questions of whether the spelling matters when, as Andrew points out, one version of the charm using the magical word “SATOR” spelled is “SAFOR” – I wonder, did the mis-spelled charm work? In which case, is it intention, Will, or vibration that makes a difference in spellcrafting? Janis Fry’s talk on Yew trees reminded me of many lovely trips to hang out in the branches of these ancient beings, hearing their time-bending music. Robert Plimer is always fun to listen to, his excitement about the parallels between ancient and modern techniques is palpable, and Sian called us to task on walking our talk as pagans who claim to honour the earth, both inspiring questions of how to improve my magical practice. Finally, Cristina’s piece on Italian folklore, of course, made me think of faeries and the similarities and differences across cultures in dealings with the spirit realm… though as Jack Hunter said: how do we know which experiences are real?

To which I have only one question: well, first we must define “real”.

And that’s a key takeaway from this event for me, we are always grappling with how to practice our magic in a world which denies magic. In a world that expects conformity, a life that steps beyond the lines is always going to be standing in the in-between. We are of the earth, but how do we walk of this earth but not in the world that denies the reality of our lives?

It’s as simple as taking a breath, slipping between, caring for the land and the spirits, and remembering that the magic is here, in the material, just a blink away.

Magic, Strangeness of Life, Witch, witchcraft

Eleven years ago I wrote a piece about what it means to me “To Be a Witch” because I was wrestling with the title I’d claimed for myself as a teen, trying to work out whether I really felt like I was entitled to it. In recent years I’ve gotten more wrapped up in the tension between its history and the way it is used today, but still, it is what I am. I have recently reached a new stage in my magical journey and so I’m reflecting on what I choose to carry with me into the next chapter… Looking back over what I wrote then, it is still true, so I’d like to share it with you, once more, tonight:

I wonder what it takes to be a Witch, what it means.

I feel like it is a title that should be earned, and I feel that you earn it by working on yourself, constantly working to be the best you can be as a human being; as part fey, part animal, part divine.

I feel that it represents an inner power, earned through clearing yourself and connecting to the realms beyond the physical, beyond the so called  ‘mundane’. To be a little Fey, deep down.

I feel that it involves a balancing act between the light and the dark, in yourself and in the world.

I feel that it involves a deep sense of Pride which, in its true form, includes humility. Pride is knowing your place in the world, knowing your value and valuing all other beings in the world, knowing everything has a place and a function and is sacred, including yourself.

I feel that it involves acting in alignment with your values, your beliefs, walking your talk and speaking your mind.

I feel that it involves constant attunement to the flow of nature, the flow of magic, coming back to yourself when you notice you are distracted, reconnecting at every moment possible.

I feel that it involves magic, striving to know your True Desire, True Will, who you are fundamentally, and changing consciousness (and the world) in accordance with this.

I feel that it means someone fiercely joyful, deeply compassionate, righteous in their anger when necessary, powerful in themselves, truly honest  and eternally loving.

I feel that it involves doing your best, not Perfection, but a process of improvement.

I feel that to be a Witch is to do all these things, and with a particular flavour, of deep forest greens and cool nights, of full moons through starlit skies, of Northern landscapes before the snow. The emerald lands of home.

I strive, every day, every moment, to do these things, to live connected, aware, to reconnect when I find myself scattered and distracted, to know myself and act in accordance with my Self, to be passionate and compassionate and full of joy. Mine is not a path of yellows and oranges, of sand or smoke or baking sun, but of cool deep forests and winter’s rain, of the hearth fire that holds the damp at bay, and the sun which warms but rarely burns. I am not perfect, but I am in process, and so I claim the title ‘Witch’

It is all to easy to get wrapped up in the academia of things, and whether or not something is correct. And that does matter. But also, so often there is something utterly essential in remembering what is in Truth. Within magic there is an important piece about being True to your self and having faith in your Truth, in knowing when to trust your feeling, or more accurately intuition, about something. And in reaching into the heart of the matter and finding spirit there.

So I still stand by this today.

I am a witch, of the cunning folk,
I am fey and human and divine.
I dance with the gods and the shining ones,
and weave magic with this heart of mine,
I sing the song of the forest-folk,
and honour the dead of my clan,
and under the light of the moon, sun, and stars,
I've enchanted since all time began.

5 ways to do magic when you feel disconnected

Druidry, learn magic, Living Life, Magic, Witch, witchcraft

Last month I had one of my “I’m not quite feeling it” phases, where the sparkle just kinda gets ironed out of the world. I wasn’t unhappy, just not sparkly. It happens sometimes, and I often get to a point where I worry that it’ll last forever… it’s the “but what if I never get that magical, enchanted feeling again” or worse “what if the magic is gone?””. That’s normally the thought that kickstarts me into using my tools and finding the magic very quickly. It wasn’t gone, just out of sight for a little while. And these always help me, so I thought I’d share them because maybe they’ll help you too.

1. When I’m tired it’s really hard to *feel* the magic, but that doesn’t mean it is gone. It just means my senses are tired! Instead of trying to push myself and work harder at feeling it, I trust that it is there and look for ways the universe and my spirits are supporting me. What signs are they sending me that I am not alone? So look for those signs. The white feathers that appear when you think of your ancestors, perhaps, or the unexpected tip…

2. Rather than pushing my personal energy at these times, I lean into kitchen witchery. Add ginger to your meals for a bit of extra fire. Soothe your nerves (and your stomach) with peppermint tea. Let the plants support you.

3. A daily practice can help ground you and carry you through rough times. Even something as simple as a prayer at bedtime for restful sleep and sweet dreams can help nourish your spirit and strengthen the relationship between you and those you pray to.

4. Candles. Fire is magic. Light a candle (safely) and let the fire warm your spirit and light your way. Using the aesthetic aspects of magic engages our senses and gets more of us in alignment with magic again. If you’ve got the energy, make a ritual of your candle lighting and let it be an act of magic that brings the sense of magic back.

5. Go and sit with a tree, or a river, or the ocean. Spend some time outside with one of the bigger beings that hold a steady connection to spirit. Let the waters, or the woods, hold you for a little while and wash away the muck of daily living. It’s good for you on all levels.

And as a bonus:

6. Rest and refill your creative well. Read something that inspires you, doodle or play with something creative, or have a cuppa with a friend (in person or over a video call). Magic is hard when you’re depleted so refuel, sleep well, and trust that things will feel better soon.

How do you recover that spark of enchantment when life starts getting grey? What advice would you give to someone struggling to reconnect to their magic? Let’s support each other in the comments and remember our way home together.

In delight,

~ Halo x
