Mystery of Mystery, in her Name: Babalon. These were the words spoken when for the first time I encountered Her. I was attending a Gnostic Mass hosted by an O.T.O. body in Amsterdam and I literally knew almost nothing about the ritual, the Order, Thelema, Aleister Crowley or the Book of the Law… yet the Mass was performed to beautifully that I wanted to know more about it and I decided to become a member in order to explore…

Fast forward 30+ years later, I am a member of the O.T.O. I have the privilege and honour to be a bodymaster and initiator. Yet first and foremost I consider myself a Thelemite and within that current I am a devotee of Babalon, a devotion which is reflected in my Magical Name: AD156 and in the way I live my life.

Over the years quite few books, essays and poems have been written about Her or in Her name by fellow Thelemites, devotees or academic professionals. And interestingly all these publications have the effect that Babalon – and all Her different names and titles – is becoming slowly more familiar to a larger and often more pagan oriented audience. Or perhaps it is better to say that She Herself takes a broader stage, connecting with people who either actively seek Her or are sought by Her.

Babalon appears in our history through the works of John Dee and Edward Kelley, a long time before Aleister Crowley became familiar with Her, giving Her the title of ‘Scarlet Woman’ and using Her Seal for his own Order, the A.A. While becoming more well known in ceremonial magickal circles, other Orders dedicated to Her came into existence. At the same time, more and more people who were and are not inclined to perform ceremonial magick, establish a relationship with Her. They approach her in ways they are more familiar with like (traditional) witchcraft, chaos magic or using shamanistic techniques.

The book you have now in your hands is – as far as I am aware – the first attempt to establish an active relationship with Babalon from a pagan perspective, using practices and ways of working common to that Path. And although it is a very broad Path, consisting of different strands of paganism, the general approach described in here works and enables you to develop your own style.
